This paper is based on the spirit of cherishing things in traditional Chinese culture and the ideological need for green development while lamenting the current environmental destruction, the effects of extreme weather, and the painful loss of memories and emotions of objects. The author has theoretical and methodological research in the teaching of art and design in high schools and has invested in a combination of creative approaches to the reuse of waste materials and educational forms that foster the concept of environmental protection. The core of the teaching is practical creation, which develops in a progressive form from theoretical research to the appreciation of works and finally practical creation.Firstly, the theoretical origins of fostering environmental protection concepts are clarified with the spirit of cherishing things and the idea of green development in traditional Chinese culture, and the relevant concepts of environmental protection concepts are outlined.A definition of waste materials is carried out and a full range of research is carried out in relation to the emotional qualities and aesthetic analysis of waste materials. An introduction to contemporary green design through secondary creation of materials, discussing the feasibility and importance of developing environmental concepts in high school art and design teaching.Secondly,a survey of the current status of developing students’ concepts of environmental protection at the senior secondary level was conducted, with an interpretation of the senior secondary art curriculum standards at its core.Investigated and analyzed in the form of student questionnaires and interviews with senior secondary school art teachers.Explores multidisciplinary teaching strategies for infusing environmental education in art education and ways to foster the concept of environmental protection in students at the senior secondary level. This is achieved by making full use of teaching materials, changing the habit of paper and pencil teaching, and expanding the content of teaching sustainable concepts to practical environmental issues. The final design of the high school art and design course is based on theoretical research and investigation of the current situation, the development of a design consciousness that finds inspiration in everyday life, and the systematic concept of combining the expression of creative thinking with the selection of materials for production. The Appreciation course was developed by expanding on the author’s creative practice, while the case studies in the Practice course are centered on promoting the concept of sustainability. The study found that this breakthrough from the previous paper and pencil model of art teaching plays an important role in meeting students’ creative needs, improving their hands-on practical skills, strengthening their cross-border thinking, developing their collaborative and creative abilities, and advancing the overall development of their comprehensive abilities.Ultimately it can provide a theoretical yet practical approach and guidance for reusing waste materials and cultivating the concept of environmental protection in students, putting it into high school art and design teaching, and providing a valuable reference for innovative teaching models.
