The report of the 20th Party Congress proposes to accelerate the high-quality development of education, strengthen the construction of the teaching force and promote the professional growth of teachers. With the deepening of the curriculum reform of basic education, the proposal of "building a high-quality professional teaching team" has put forward higher standards and requirements for the teaching profession. As teaching research is a necessary path for teachers’ professional growth, high quality preschool education cannot be achieved without a high level of kindergarten teachers, and improving kindergarten teachers’ teaching and research ability has become a top priority and an inherent need for their professional development. In this study, questionnaires and interviews were used to investigate the teaching and research abilities of 147 kindergarten teachers in six public kindergartens in urban areas of Hanzhong City. The questionnaire data and interviews were used to understand and analyse the problems and reasons for the teaching and research capacity of public kindergartens in the urban areas of Hanzhong City,so as to propose corresponding strategies for the improvement of the teaching and research capacity of public kindergarten teachers in the urban areas of Hanzhong City. The findings show that:(1)the teaching and research ability of public kindergarten teachers in the urban areas of Hanzhong City is generally at the middle to upper level;(2)there are significant differences in the teaching and research ability of public kindergarten teachers in the urban areas of Hanzhong City in terms of age and teaching experience;however, there are no significant differences in terms of gender, title, education, different majors and different types of labour.Combining the contents of the interviews, the following conclusions were obtained through the analysis of the problems and causes of the teaching and research ability of public kindergarten teachers in urban areas of Hanzhong City:(1)teachers’ awareness of teaching and research is weak and they lack independent action;(2)teachers’ knowledge reserves are insufficient and the foundation of teaching and research needs to be solid;(3)teachers’ lack of support for teaching and research leads to insufficient motivation for teaching and research;(4)the teaching and research atmosphere in kindergartens is relatively insufficient and teachers’ enthusiasm for teaching and research is not high(5)the lack of communication and collaboration in kindergartens has led to a weak sense of cooperation among teachers;(6)teacher training is relatively weak and teachers’ competence is affected.Based on the findings, this study proposes six targeted strategies to improve the teaching and research capacity of public kindergarten teachers in urban areas of Hanzhong City:(1)teachers should strengthen their awareness of teaching and research and improve their independent action;(2)teachers should strengthen their knowledge base and consolidate their teaching and research foundation;(3)kindergartens should provide support for teaching and research to stimulate teachers’ teaching and research energy;(4)kindergartens should create a teaching and research atmosphere and optimise the teaching and research environment;(5)kindergartens should strengthen academic exchanges and realise their teaching and research capacity;(6)kindergartens should provide teachers with the necessary knowledge and skills to improve their teaching and research capacity.(5)Kindergartens should strengthen academic exchanges to achieve collaborative progress;(6)Kindergartens should strengthen teacher training to help teachers grow.
