A Study On The Practice Of Parent Support Groups For Children With Disabilities

Children with disabilities are a special and vulnerable group of people in human society and need more care and attention from everyone living around them.However,for the primary caregivers of children with disabilities,they often have low self-esteem and shyness due to their long-term care of children with disabilities,which leads to the reluctance of these primary caregivers of children with disabilities to communicate and interact with more people,and the lack of confidence and confidence in interpersonal interactions.Currently,society pays less attention to and understands less about the problems that exist in parental support for children with disabilities,and the help provided is quite very limited.In this thesis,we conducted semi-structured interviews with 21 parents of children with disabilities who were receiving rehabilitation training in the "Tomorrow Project" program of M Children’s Welfare Institution in Yinchuan,Ningxia,collected information on the basic situation of the families,analyzed and evaluated the problems in focus,and selected 8 group members from 21 interviewees as the subjects.Members were selected as research subjects to carry out support service activities in M child welfare institution.During the group work service,the social workers applied the enrichment theory and social support theory to build a formal social support network and an informal support network for the parents of children with disabilities,so as to provide specialized services for the clients.By mapping the problematic needs of parents of children with disabilities and integrating the needs of children and parents,the social worker makes full use of the resources of the organization to deliver specialized services to parents and children.The social worker developed a group service plan and conducted seven support service activities for eight group members.The main research methods used in the study were literature review,participant observation,and semi-structured interviews.The social workers supported the parents of children with disabilities in emotional aspect and reduced the negative anxiety of the parents.In the material aspect,the social workers linked the material resources donated by caring people to distribute to parents,solving some items that parents actually need in life,effectively building a good social support network for parents of children with disabilities.During the implementation of the group activities,social workers play the role of supporters,coordinators and resource linkers in the whole process.Overall,the author’s application of enrichment theory and social support theory is effective in providing support services to parents of children with disabilities.
