Literacy teaching is the focus and foundation of primary language teaching.The contextual approach is a method in which the teacher purposefully introduces or creates vivid and concrete scenes with certain emotional colors and images to induce certain attitudinal experiences in students so as to help them understand the material and develop their mental functions.Applying the contextual approach to literacy teaching in the first grade can stimulate students’ interest in literacy,give them an understanding of the cultural meaning of Chinese characters,and enhance teachers’ literacy teaching skills.The ultimate goal of literacy teaching is to integrate literacy with use.The concept of contextual literacy teaching provides teachers with teaching ideas,but there are still problems in practice,mainly including the creation of contexts that ignore students’ existing literacy experiences;the single way of creating contexts;the formalization of contextual classrooms;and the lack of teachers’ ability to describe specific language.An in-depth analysis of the causes of the problems suggests that the reasons for these problems are: teachers’ lack of in-depth understanding of contextual teaching theory;teachers’ lack of systematic study of contextual teaching method;teachers’ lack of systematic preparation before class.To sum up,it is recommended to optimize the application strategies of contextual teaching method in the first grade of elementary school: broaden the learning path of contextual theory and improve teacher training strategies;carry out research on contextual theory to improve professionalism;analyze the teaching materials in depth based on the standards;redesign classroom teaching based on the learning situation;enrich the means of creating context;and optimize contextual teaching methods.
