Since the new curriculum reform,developing students’ core literacies has become a major task in school education.Logical reasoning,as an important part of core literacy,is an important method for making conjectures and rigorous proofs,and is the basis for students’ problem solving.Cultivating students’ logical reasoning skills helps them to think rationally and enhance their core literacy.As junior high school is a critical period for the development of thinking,it is necessary to investigate the current situation of junior high school students’ logical reasoning ability and propose effective strategies for its development.In this study,280 Grade 9 students in H City,Hubei Province were selected for the study with reference to the SOLO categorical evaluation method,and their mathematical logical reasoning ability was investigated using the test method and 10 teachers were interviewed using the interview method,and strategies for developing students’ logical reasoning ability were proposed from the perspectives of schools,teachers and students.The survey showed that the logical reasoning ability of junior secondary school students was mainly manifested at multiple structural levels,with an overall normal distribution.In terms of the structural dimension,the ability of sympathetic reasoning is higher than that of deductive reasoning,and there is a significant difference between the levels of sympathetic reasoning,deductive reasoning and logical reasoning ability of junior high school students.In terms of the domain dimension,junior high school students’ logical reasoning ability was strongest in the domain of number and algebra and weakest in the domain of graphics and geometry.Significant differences were found between the two dimensions in Number and Algebra,Graphics and Geometry and Probability and Statistics.Correlation analysis revealed no significant differences in the logical reasoning ability of junior high school students at the gender level;there were significant differences in the nature of schools,with private secondary schools being stronger than public secondary schools;and there were significant differences in mathematics achievement,with better mathematics achievement being associated with stronger logical reasoning ability.Based on the findings,strategies for developing students’ logical reasoning skills are proposed from the perspectives of schools,teachers and students respectively.At the school level,this can be done by organising reasoning training to draw teachers’ attention to reasoning skills,conducting reasoning classes to experience logical reasoning skills in teaching and organising fun competitions to experience logical reasoning skills in activities.At the teacher level,teachers can strengthen their own learning of logical reasoning,guide students to attach importance to logical reasoning skills and infuse logical reasoning skills in their teaching;at the student level,they can improve their cognitive structure and consolidate the foundation of reasoning;focus on variation training,develop reasoning habits and summarise and reflect after class to develop reasoning skills. |
