A Study On The Relationship Between Body Talk On Social Media,Trait Self-Objectification,Body Shame And Restrained Eating Of Senior High School Students | | Posted on:2024-09-29 | Degree:Master | Type:Thesis | | Country:China | Candidate:Y Wang | Full Text:PDF | | GTID:2557306917963789 | Subject:Mental health education | | Abstract/Summary: | | | Body talk on social media is communication about physical appearance on social networks.In recent years,social networking sites have gradually become an important way for teenagers to show themselves,communicate and make friends in the network era.At the same time,they also provide a new and more convenient platform for body talk.Triple impact model holds that long-term active social media will lead to negative cognition,emotion and behavior of individuals.Trait self-objectification is the extent to which,in everyday life,individuals internalize others’ views of their bodies.Body shame is a negative emotion an individual experiences when they feel dissatisfied with their body in comparison to their ideal body shape.Previous studies have shown that the degree of trait self-objectification and body shame may influence restrictive eating.Restrained eating refers to a long-term effort to control food intake.Restrained eating has been seen among high school students.Long-term restrained eating can be harmful to the physical and mental health of high school students.Therefore,this study aims to explore the mechanism of influence of body talk on social media on restrained eating,and the role of trait self-objectification and body shame between them,so as to provide more theoretical basis for mental health educators to better help students prevent and alleviate restrained eating behaviors in the future.In this study,a total of 646 high school students from three high schools in Heilongjiang Province were investigated using the Social Media Body Talk Scale,Body Surveillance Scale,Chinese Body Shame Scale and Restrictive Eating Scale.The specific results are as follows:1.There are significant differences between high school students’ body talk on social media and restrained eating in gender,grade,individuals with different BMI values and whether they are the only child;There are significant differences between trait selfobjectification and body shame among high school students in terms of gender,BMI and whether they are the only child.2.There is a significant positive correlation between body talk on social media,trait self-objectification,body shame and restrained eating.Body talk on social media,trait self-objectification and body shame positively predicted restrictive eating.3.Body talk on social media affects the restrained eating of high school students through three ways,one is the independent mediating effect of trait self-objectification;But the solitary mediating effect of body shame;The third is the chain mediating effect of trait self-objectification and body shame.Conclusions: Body talk on social media not only affects the trait self-objectification level and body shame level of high school students,but also affects the restrained eating behavior of high school students through the influence of trait self-objectification and body shame.Based on this,this study proposed precise educational suggestions for school,family and social field workers to reduce the occurrence of restrained eating behaviors among high school students by reducing the frequency of body talk on social media,reducing the degree of trait self-objectification and reducing body shame among high school students. | | Keywords/Search Tags: | body talk on social media, trait self-objectification, body shame, restrained eating, senior high school student | | Related items |
