Objective: This study investigates the current physical activity of secondary school students, reveals the characteristics of secondary school students’ body shame, seeks to explore the positive effects of physical activity on secondary school body shame and the mediating effects of body self-esteem,refines the model of body shame, and provides new ideas for secondary school students’ mental health problems and safeguards their physical and mental health. Methods: This study used a questionnaire to investigate the relationship between physical activity, body esteem and body shame in high school and to determine whether body esteem mediates the relationship between physical activity and body shame.Results:(1)In the analysis of the results of differences in the dimensions of physical activity among high school students on the demographic variables, there were significant gender and grade differences in exercise intensity, time and total score, where the post hoc comparison of grades was sophomore > senior > junior;(2)In the analysis of the results of differences in the dimensions of physical self-esteem among high school students on the different demographic variables, there were significant differences in ethnicity and whether they were only children, where only children scored higher than non-only children, and Ethnic minority scores were higher than those of Han Chinese students, and in the analysis of differences by grade level, significant differences were found only for the dimensions of motor skills, physical condition and physical attractiveness. The higher the level of physical activity, the higher the level of physical self-esteem(F=55.31,p<0.01).(3)In the analysis of gender differences in the two dimensions of body shame among high school students, significant gender differences were found in both externalised and internalised body shame, and girls scored higher than boys.Using different levels of exercise as a grouping variable,it was found that individuals with higher levels of physical activity had lower levels of body shame(F=30.64,p<0.01);(4)The mean Pearson correlation coefficient between physical exercise and body esteem was 0.30,p<0.01,the mean Pearson correlation coefficient between physical exercise and body shame was 0.24,p<0.01,and the mean Pearson correlation coefficient between body esteem and body shame was 0.46,p<0.01;(5)The regression model between the three reveals that physical activity has a negative predictive effect on body shame, finding that as the five dimensions of body self-esteem increase, the externalised body shame and internalised body shame dimensions of individuals’ body shame decrease, leading to a decrease in overall body shame and ultimately affecting the level of shame;(6)In the effect of physical activity on body shame, mediated by body self-esteem,the The five dimensions of body self-esteem,i.e.,sense of physical self-worth,motor skills, physical condition, and physical quality physical attractiveness each have indirect effects on body shame to varying degrees. Conclusion: The overall level of physical activity among high school students is low, with gender and grade differences. There are gender,only-child or not and ethnic differences in body self-esteem,and differences in the dimensions of body self-esteem and overall scores by exercise level. There were gender differences in body shame and differences in body shame dimensions and total scores by level of exercise. There were two correlations between the levels of body shame, physical activity and body esteem, with physical activity being significantly positively correlated with body esteem, physical activity being significantly negatively correlated with body shame, and body esteem being significantly negatively correlated with body shame. The dimensions of body esteem partially mediated the relationship between physical activity and body shame, this suggests that participation in physical activity raises levels of body self-esteem and further improves individual body shame. |
