Counselors are the main force of ideological and political education work and daily behavior management in colleges and universities, and they play a very important role in the growth and success of students. With the monopoly of high-quality student sources by public universities, the work of counselors in private higher education institutions is more challenging. However, due to their special characteristics, private higher education institutions pay too little attention to the counselor team, and the lack of stability, professional fulfillment and high turnover rate of the counselor team are very common. In the research on the motivation of college counselor team, there are relatively few studies on the motivation of counselors in private higher education institutions. This paper takes the incentives of counselors’ team in private higher vocational colleges in Guangdong Province as the research object.Through literature research method, questionnaire survey method and interview method,on the basis of studying the special characteristics of counselors’ team in private higher vocational colleges,we analyze and study the current situation of incentives of counselors’ team in private higher vocational colleges in Guangdong Province in terms of training and upgrading incentives, personal promotion incentives and salary and welfare incentives, and summarize the current problems of incentives of counselors’ team in private higher vocational colleges in Guangdong Province. The problems of counselor team motivation in Guangdong private higher vocational institutions include low salary and benefits and insufficient guarantee, unsound training system and unclear development prospect, vague authority and low professional identity, unscientific assessment mechanism and lack of target, etc. The reasons for the problems are analyzed from three dimensions: government, society, and universities. Finally, from the perspective of public governance, combining Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory,two-factor theory and equity theory, the model of collaborative governance and multiple incentives of the government, higher education institutions and counselors is constructed, and the countermeasures to improve the incentives of counselors’ team in higher education institutions are put forward experimentally, including increasing policy support and sound financial support at the government level;expanding publicity to obtain social recognition. At the level of higher education institutions,we should improve the salary and benefits of counselors, improve the training system and clarify the career path, set up scientific assessment and reasonably use the assessment results. At the level of counselors themselves, they should improve their cognition, establish correct awareness, and cultivate professional identity;at the same time, they should also continuously enhance their personal quality and use their strengths to find their self-worth in work practice. It is hoped that the study of this paper can prompt the government and related departments and private vocational colleges to give more attention and support to counselors in private higher vocational colleges, and strive to build a high-level counselor team that promotes the healthy development of private higher vocational colleges.
