In modern teaching process, the role of teachers and students in the classroom has changed considerably, with the once teacher-led classroom gradually transforming into a student-led classroom, where students as recipients of knowledge are transformed from passive to active, and teachers are converted from the role of knowledge transmitters to supervisors and guides. The geography education curriculum reform also focuses on the subjective status of students, requiring students to give full play to their subjective initiative. The role-playing teaching method, which can mobilize students’ enthusiasm,is a teaching method that conforms to and practices the concept of geography education curriculum reform.Allowed to play different roles in learning situations, students can try to ask questions, analyze problems and solve them, thus enabling themselves to acquire geography knowledge actively and improve their ability to learn geography. In this paper, the author use literature research, comparative research, classroom observation and questionnaires to discuss the current state of research on the role-playing method, the practice of comparing it with traditional teaching, the classroom performance of students and the effectiveness of the role-playing method in improving students’ geography skills. This paper compares and contrasts the role-playing method with traditional teaching, using the section on “Coordinated Development in the Basin” in high school human geography as the main case study. The traditional teaching method was used to teach the lesson “Coordinated Development in the Basin” and the role-playing method mainly focuses on the practical examples on the topic of “Coordinated Development in the Basin”.Finally,a questionnaire was used to analyze the students’ perceptions and experiences of the two teaching methods, which led to the following conclusions: students preferred the role-playing method, they wanted more variety in the teaching mode and the role-playing method was more effective than the traditional method in improving students’ geography skills. Therefore, the significance of applying the role-playing method in high school geography teaching cannot be ignored.According to this paper, several suggestions for using the role-play method in the geography classroom are drawn up: enriching the teachers’ knowledge base and cultivating the students’ spirit of exploration;multi-dimensional effect evaluation and real-time feedback;encouraging students and creating a relaxed atmosphere. It is hoped that this paper will provide a reference for the majority of geography teachers.
