Homework plays an important role in teachers’ teaching as well as students’ learning.It can help students consolidate the knowledge and skills learned in class and cultivate good learning habits.According to The Compulsory Education English Curriculum Standards(2011),it can be found that English teaching activities should not be limited to classroom teaching,but extended to learning and life outside the classroom.Homework is a natural continuation and supplement of classroom teaching.It is an effective way to improve the quality of teaching and cultivate students’ comprehensive language ability.To learn the current situation of English homework in the middle and high grades of primary school students,this thesis by taking 645 students ranging from grade 3 to grade 6and 6 English teachers from three primary schools in Dalian as the research subjects with the research methods of questionnaire and interview to conduct the study,aims to analyze two questions: 1)What is the current situation of English homework in middle and high grades of target primary schools? 2)What are the causes of the existing problems in English homework in the middle and high grades of primary school?Through the analysis of the data and interview results,the characteristics and problems are as follows:1)Boring content and single form of homework 2)Lack of stratified homework design 3)Single correction method for English homework 4)Undifferentiated assignment and limited purpose.Through investigation,some problems are found: 1)Overemphasis on the universality of assignments and lack of design;2)Overemphasis on standard answers and ignorance of individual differences of students;3)Simple understanding of the purpose and function of assignments;4)Students’ negative attitude towards finishing English homework.In response to the existing problems,the thesis puts forward the following suggestions to improve English homework in middle and high grades of primary schools: 1)Advocating teachers to design hierarchical assignments and enriching assignment forms;2)Advocating teachers to adopt diversified correction methods to reflect students’ dominant position in learning;3)Strengthening teachers’ awareness of feedback,enrich the main body of homework evaluation;4)Holding various English learning activities to cultivate students’ interest in English learning.The investigation not only helps to get comprehensive information about the current situation of English homework,but also provides investigation basis for the local educational administrative departments and schools to make policies related to English homework.
