| As one of the four English curriculum objectives in senior high school, the cultural awareness objective points out that students are expected to acquire cultural knowledge,to firm cultural confidence, and to have the capacity for intercultural communication and dissemination of Chinese culture.Although some efforts have been made to achieve this goal in senior high school English teaching, the phenomenon of “Chinese culture aphasia” still exists. In 2000,Professor Cong Cong from Nanjing University proposed the phenomenon of Chinese culture aphasia, which means that students cannot express Chinese culture fluently and accurately in English due to the lack of knowledge of Chinese culture and the poor ability to express Chinese culture in English, resulting in cultural communication barriers or failure.Based on the requirements of the Curriculum Standards(2020)and Krashen’s Input Hypothesis and Swain’s Output Hypothesis, this study conducts a survey on 105 students in Grade Two and 53 senior high school English teachers, trying to answer two questions by means of test, questionnaire and interview:(1)What is the current situation of Chinese culture aphasia in senior high school students’ English learning?(2)What are the reasons that cause the Chinese culture aphasia?First of all, according to the results of the test, senior high school students’ ability of expressing Chinese culture in English is generally low, which indicates the phenomenon of Chinese culture aphasia at different levels among these students.Secondly, after analyzing the current textbooks, questionnaires, and interviews, the author found that the causes of Chinese culture aphasia come from different aspects:(1)From the perspective of students, most students are interested in Chinese culture but lack relevant knowledge reserve, especially the English expressions of Chinese culture.Students cannot express Chinese culture fluently in English.(2)From the perspective of teachers, teachers are interested in Chinese culture and know the importance of Chinese culture. But they seldom teach Chinese culture in English lessons, that is,Chinese culture accounts for a small proportion of English classes.(3)From the perspective of textbooks, they have included a certain amount of Chinese culture, but they contain insufficient categories and the contents are not systematically enough.Based on the above research findings, this study finally puts forward the corresponding suggestions from the perspectives of students, teachers, textbook editors, and schools so as to improve the phenomenon of Chinese culture aphasia in senior high school English teaching. As for students, they need to actively learn about Chinese culture and its expressions in English to increase their knowledge base.Students can make full use of modern technologies, such as downloading oral practice software on mobile phones,so as to enhance their oral inputs and outputs of Chinese culture. Moreover, students should try to communicate more with their peers and teachers in English in daily life.As for teachers, they should also positively learn about Chinese culture.By combining modern multimedia, teachers can use different teaching methods to teach Chinese culture in the class and assign diverse homework related to Chinese culture. In terms of textbook editors, they should add more Chinese culture content and cover more aspects of Chinese culture knowledge in textbooks. With regard to schools, they can build bilingual culture walls and regularly update Chinese culture to increase students’ input.Schools can regularly organize activities related to Chinese culture and encourage students to participate so as to increase students’ output. |
