As is known, language and culture are independent. Language is media and cattier of language, while culture reflects and restricts language communication. Therefore, culture teaching, as a key point to improve students' competence of intercultural communication, is an indispensable part in English teaching. A lot of researches have been conducted into the teaching of the target culture, but not the native culture. However, with the development of China, only the grasp of target culture cannot complete a successful intercultural communication. Although many Chinese students are familiar with the basic knowledge of Chinese culture, they cannot express it properly in English, causing obstacles in intercultural communication. Consequently, English teachers in China should integrate Chinese culture into foreign language teaching, which is both beneficial for proceeding intercultural communication and spreading Chinese culture to all over the world.In the thesis, the review on the studies of culture teaching in the west and China shows the necessity of integrating language and culture teaching in foreign language teaching, specialists and scholars also point out the importance of teaching Chinese culture in English teaching in China. However, coursebook analysis of Chinese culture and how to integrate Chinese culture into foreign language teaching in high school have not caught due attention. On the basis of relevant theories and researches of Byram, Zhao Lizhu, and standards and requirements in the book of New English Curriculum for Chinese Primary School and Junior/Senior Middle School, the thesis aims to analyze the Chinese culture in New Standard English that is a textbook used in senior high schools in Tianjin systematically and provide reference for teachers' adaption in teaching. Then, based on the previous theories and investigations, the author observes and analyzes two typical teaching cases mainly from the standpoint of teaching time and methods of the Chinese culture teaching, making discussions and suggestions of the teaching of the Chinese culture. Finally, the author discusses the results and limitation of the present study. In addition, suggestions for future researches in senior high school English teaching are presented.
