English idioms, poems, technical terms, or vocabulary are being taught in every middle school in China. In other words, what students in middle school in China having been taught is the culture of English. Unfortunately, Chinese culture is neglected. As a result, English learners often mix up Chinese and English even to the extent that they often fail to use their target language to express their mother culture. This phenomenon is called Chinese Cultural Aphasia. And it’s also the focus of my research. As the root and bridge, Chinese culture has the irreplaceable position. Therefore, it’s necessary to take measures to prevent foreign culture invading our mother tongue. How to master a foreign language without influencing our mother culture is the purpose of writing the thesis. The first part elaborates the purpose and significance of this study. And then reviews the historical evolvement of culture teaching and lists the related reference on Chinese cultural aphasia both at home and abroad. An extensive literature review of relevant concepts and theories are presented from the perspectives of Nash Equilibrium Theory, direct teaching method and communicative teaching method in order to lay a theoretical foundation and scientificalness for the rest of the thesis. Building on that and using questionnaires and tests, the research is carried out by 129 students and 11 English teachers in Senior Two. The result of the survey shows that the situation caused by lack of mother tongue culture in current middle school is very serious. The students’ and the teachers’ mastery of Chinese culture and ability to present it in English is far from satisfaction. The causes include lack of correct cultural values(the misunderstanding of the concept of “culture” in culture teaching; the misunderstanding of the concept of successful cross-cultural communication; the ignorance of the mother tongue culture’s positive transfer in foreign language teaching), lack of teachers’ professional quality, lack of students’ subjective initiative, absence of Chinese culture expressed in English in our teaching materials, limitations of the teaching method, interruption of interdisciplinary chain and deficiency in effective checking and measuring system. At last but not least, according to the analysis of the results, the following guidelines for teaching are made: To identify the relationship between the mother culture and the target language culture; to achieve “non-cooperate equilibrium”; to emphasize the integrity, succession and nationality of cultural teaching; to guide the students in a conceptual way and consolidate their mother culture; to improve the current teaching model; to cultivate the students appropriate cultural values; to upgrade English materials; to identify the scope of teaching of mother culture; and of to implement effective teaching testing and emphasize the importance of mother culture.
