| Micro-lessons are designed and developed purposefully with short videos as the main carrier for a certain knowledge point or learning session.It is a new type of online video course that is contextualized and supports multiple learning styles.The core content of micro-lectures is micro-video.It is an effective tool to support classroom teaching and learning,as it is an organic combination of multiple teaching resources and covers a wide range of extended resources to support teaching and learning.Reading is the foundation of English learning.It is an important input for English learning and occupies a large number of points in the college entrance examination.Interest in English reading affects attitudes toward English learning,and reading level directly affects students’ overall English ability and test scores.Constructivist theory emphasizes that teachers should build on students’ existing knowledge to construct a new body of knowledge that can help students construct their own.Cognitive load theory suggests that teaching should use appropriate tools and skills to provide appropriate background knowledge in order to reduce students’ cognitive load and promote students’ schema construction.Therefore,this study attempts to apply micro-lessons to English reading teaching and answers the following three questions through the experimental results of one hundred students in Grade 10 of Urumqi S School:(1)What is the current status of English reading classes in Urumqi S School?(2)What are students’ attitudes towards the integration of micro-lectures with English reading teaching?(3)What are the effects on students’ English reading performance when microlearning is integrated with English reading teaching?This study conducted a 12-week teaching experiment with one hundred students in Grade 10 of Urumqi S School as the study subjects.The experimental class integrated microlearning and reading instruction,while the control class used the traditional teacher-delivered classroom approach.The research instruments included a pre-test,a post-test,two questionnaires,and an interview.The data collected after the experiment was analyzed using SPSS software.This study found that micro-lectures could be successfully applied in high school English reading teaching.Students had positive attitudes toward the use of microlearning in reading instruction,and there was a visible improvement in students’ reading scores.The research implication is that: Teachers should continuously improve their IT skills and can use the Internet and software to extend teaching beyond the classroom.Traditional teaching has its own advantages.Teachers should combine traditional teaching and new tools appropriately according to teaching needs to achieve better teaching results. |
