| China’s border provinces and regions have innate advantages of close geographical proximity and close friendship with neighboring countries.With the continuous progress of China’s opening up to the outside world,the media in border provinces and regions are gradually trying to make use of their local advantages to explore a unique way of international communication.The Vietnam-related news report of Guangxi Daily is a typical international communication practice of the media in China’s border province.According to statistics,from 1949 to 2018,Guangxi Daily published more than 10,000 articles related to Vietnam.Vietnam has become one of the key countries in Guangxi Daily’s foreign reporting practice.It is of great significance for the development of local media to study the international communication practices of border provinces and regions.Based on this,this paper takes Guangxi Daily,the mainstream media in Guangxi,as the research object.After sampling the Vietnam-related news of Guangxi Daily from 2001 to 2020,it adopts the content analysis method and Fairclough’s three-dimensional critical discourse analysis method to explore the samples from three aspects: text,discourse practice and social practice.This paper attempts to explore the characteristics,production process and social causes of Vietnam-related news discourse patterns in Guangxi Daily since the new century.It is found that in terms of macro media presentation,the quantity of Vietnam-related news in Guangxi Daily has shown obvious event-driven change characteristics.In terms of news themes,Vietnam-related news is dominated by economic topics,followed by cultural topics.In terms of news genre,Vietnam-related news is more inclined to use news to report Vietnam.In terms of manuscript sources,the number of Vietnam-related articles written by journalists of Guangxi Daily on their own has been rising rapidly since 2004,and the newspaper’s awareness of writing foreign-related news independently is increasing.In terms of media discourse,the Vietnam-related news discourse is characterised by a strong official colour,obvious local propaganda and a strong sense of foreign cooperation.Guangxi Daily highlights its attention to the external cooperation and development of the Guangxi region by increasing the frequency of key words in Vietnam-related news texts,using headlines with specific sentences,increasing the use of figures and describing emotional reactions.At the same time,in the process of news discourse production,the Chinese and Vietnamese party and government departments have great space to express their opinions,and their discourse content is mostly a positive evaluation of Guangxi and the relationship between Guangxi and Vietnam,and the Vietnam-related news discourse is more often expressed as a collective consciousness and an inculcation of the consciousness of foreign cooperation.At the same time,the discourse in the process of evolution has constructed Vietnam from a "guest" to a "co-operator" seeking a win-win situation,then to a "friend" with conflicting intimate relations,and finally to a "neighbour" helping each other.This reflects the change in the focus of cooperation between Guangxi and Vietnam.In general,the Vietnam-related news discourse of Guangxi Daily is largely influenced by the evolution of Guangxi’s opening up to the outside world and the strengthening of its cooperation with Vietnam based on its strong development needs.At the same time,the fact that Guangxi Daily,as a local party newspaper,needs to strictly follow the party principle also regulates the expression of Vietnam-related news discourse.Nevertheless,the role of Guangxi Daily’s Vietnam-related news discourse as a social practice in the process of Guangxi’s social development cannot be ignored: the Vietnam-related discourse that timely disseminates Vietnamese developments helps update readers’ knowledge about Vietnam and provides information services for the multifaceted cooperation and exchange between Guangxi and Vietnam;while the Vietnam-related discourse that focuses on local development directs readers’ attention to the issues arising from Guangxi’s interaction with Vietnam and attempts to provide professional The Vietnam-related discourse that focuses on local development directs readers’ attention to the problems arising from Guangxi’s engagement with Vietnam and attempts to provide professional countermeasures and suggestions to promote the development of the Guangxi region. |
