Marx and Engels’ ideas on women’s emancipation emerged in the mid-19 th century.Based on the social and historical background in which the proletariat began to struggle indefatigably with the bourgeoisie for its own emancipation, the two great men also paid attention to the struggle of proletarian women against their poor living conditions, their own emancipation aspirations and interests, and also correctly summed up the experience of previous women’s movements. While creating the doctrine of proletarian emancipation, they analyzed the historical context of the process of the transformation of women’s status, revealed the objective laws inherent in women’s emancipation that do not depend on man’s subjective will, clarified that the fundamental prerequisite for bridging gender inequality is the development of productive forces and the abolition of private ownership, argued that women’s greater participation in public affairs is a prerequisite for women’s emancipation, and pointed out that the ultimate goal of women’s emancipation is the free and comprehensive development of everyone, including women, forming the Marx and Engels’ idea of women’s emancipation.Marx and Engels discussed the important issue of women’s emancipation within the theoretical framework of the materialist conception of history.By examining the material mode of production in the early stages of human society, they pointed out that the subjugation and torture of women was a product of the development of social production to a certain stage, and that the essence of women’s oppression was in fact class oppression. In this sense, the two great men explored the future emancipation of women in depth, concluding that women’s emancipation is in itself a process of class emancipation and women’s own initiative in pursuing emancipation,a process in which they give full play to their subjective initiative to rebel against the unreasonable patriarchal society characterized by the total domination of men over women as a social ideology. In Marx and Engels’ thought on women’s emancipation, class emancipation and gender emancipation are two-way interactions, and the two are consistent.Marx and Engels’ ideas on women’s emancipation creatively answer the question of how to eliminate the social and historical conditions and class conditions that hinder women’s emancipation, that is,how to achieve women’s emancipation.Following the basic methods of historical and dialectical materialism, this article analyses the real and theoretical conditions that gave birth to Marx and Engels’ ideas on women’s emancipation, and returns to the position of Marx and Engels, based on the classic texts of the two revolutionary mentors. The aim is to clarify the development of women’s emancipation,to summarize its basic content, and to reveal and grasp the inner laws of women’s emancipation. On the one hand,it strengthens the overall study of Marx and Engels’ ideology and theory, and on the other hand,it lays the foundation for the socialist theory of women with Chinese characteristics.By placing the theoretical perspective in the context of the road to women’s emancipation in socialism with Chinese characteristics,we find that Marx and Engels’ ideas on women’s emancipation are still the guiding principles for the continuous development of the cause of women’s emancipation in China, providing invaluable practical guidance for the emancipation and development of Chinese women in the economic, political and cultural fields.
