The Xinhua Daily was the first major daily newspaper established by the Chinese Communist Party during the War of Resistance, and the only publicly circulated party newspaper in the National Unification Area, carrying the heavy burden of political propaganda for the people of the National Unification Area. This article takes Xinhua Daily as an entry point to reveal the historical background of Xinhua Daily’s political propaganda to young students in the National Unification Area;introduces the process and main contents of Xinhua Daily’s political propaganda to young students in the National Unification Area;summarises the characteristics of Xinhua Daily’s political propaganda to young students in the National Unification Area, explores its propaganda effect, and summarises the inspiration for the contemporary party newspaper’s political propaganda work to young students. When the anti-Japanese war broke out, facing the unfavourable situation where the enemy was strong and we were weak, promoting the formation of an anti-Japanese national united front through political propaganda and realising a nation-wide anti-Japanese war was the key to winning the war. After Japan launched its full-scale invasion of China,a large number of colleges and universities moved inward and a large number of young students gathered in Chongqing, which provided convenient conditions for carrying out political propaganda work for young students in the National Unification Area.Unlike the Nationalist government’s suppression and persecution of the young student movement, the Communist Party of China(CPC),since its establishment, has attached great importance to the social status of young students and led the youth movement in the right direction. After the second collaboration between the Communist Party of China(CPC)and the Chinese Communist Party(CCP),the CCP gained legitimacy in the Nationalist Unification Area(NUA)and founded the Xinhua Daily to strengthen political propaganda for young students and to care for and love their growth. At the same time,Xinhua Daily focused on strengthening political theory propaganda according to the characteristics of young students, enhancing their understanding of the guidelines and policies of the Communist Party of China;at the ideological level,it helped young students strengthen their awareness of political democracy and enhance their identification with the Communist Party. The political propaganda of Xinhua Daily for young students in the National Unification Area during the war period developed targeted propaganda characteristics according to the changes in the current situation and the specificity of the propaganda targets.Guided by a Marxist view of youth,it adopted a popular approach among young students and used flexible layout design to implement the propaganda theme of uniting against the war. With the help of both adequate coverage and flexible operation,Xinhua Daily has inspired young students in the National Unification Area to fight against the war, built a good image of the CPC,enhanced the understanding and recognition of its anti-war policy guidelines among young people in the National Unification Area, and promoted the all-round development of young students at the same time.Xinhua Daily’s political propaganda for young students in the National Unification Area sheds light on the need for contemporary party newspapers to adhere to the leadership of the Party, adhere to the masses in running the newspaper, innovate propaganda forms and stick to the truth. An in-depth study of Xinhua Daily’s political propaganda for young students during the war period provides important lessons and inspiration for the party newspaper in the new era to unite the power of youth and help realise the Chinese dream.
