Xinhua Daily was the only official Party newspaper published by the Communist Party of China during the Anti-Japanese War. During this difficult period, the paper made brilliant contributions to evoke awareness of the nation’s heroic spirit resisting the Japanese aggressors, developing a unique method of propaganda under the guidance of the Party. The following dissertation will explore the foundation, goals, content, strategies, and ultimately, effectiveness of this propaganda campaign, for reference to the propaganda campaign of contemporary Communist Party of China.This dissertation explores the propaganda campaign of Xinhua Daily during the Anti-Japanese War in five parts.In Part One, the background of Xinhua Daily’s propaganda campaign is described. When Japanese imperialists launched their aggressive war against China, the entire nation was in peril, with millions of Chinese suffering. Though the Communist Party of China and the Kuomintang had renewed their alliance against the Japanese in the war, the Kuomintang still implemented the unilateral lines of the war and strictly controlled speech about anti-Japanese war. Xinhua Daily arose in this pivotal moment in China’s history as the Party’s mouthpiece of propaganda against the Japanese.In Part Two, historical documents serve as examples of the content published by Xinhua Daily during the war. The newspaper not only exposed the cruel persecution, lure and massacring of Chinese by the Japanese, but it also provided current, strategic waypoints for soldiers and civilians to mobilize against the Japanese troops. Mao Zedong’s preliminary theoretical ideas on the war were published, alongside public recognition of our patriotic generals for their service on the battlefield. Xinhua Daily also revealed the Kuomintang’s attempts to undermine the Anti-Japanese national union. Ultimately, the newspaper stood as encouragement of democracy, equality, and freedom.In Part Three, Xinhua Daily’s unique and innovative propaganda campaign strategy is described through detailed review of historical literature. The newspaper played the role of mouthpiece to the Party and called on the general public to be actively resistant towards the Japanese aggressors. The newspaper also exposed the Kuomintang’s intentions to suppress the Communist Party. Furthermore, the uniqueness and ingenuity of Xinhua Daily’s news reporting strategy is reviewed.In Part Four, Xinhua Daily’s effectiveness on reporting the Anti-Japanese War is summarized. To this end, under the incredibly strenuous conditions surrounding the country, Xinhua Daily’s achievements were remarkable. The glorious image of the Communist Party of China established among Chinese citizens, and the Party’s influence was expanded. The Anti-Japanese National Union was consolidated, and the process of Marxism was in China was promoted. The newspaper also rose the enthusiasm of China’s citizens, the determination of its soldiers, and promoted the unity and resistance of the community, made a huge contribution to the overall victory over the Japanese.In Part Five, the dissertation concluded with a statement on potential enlightenments to the contemporary Party’s propaganda campaign which can take from the experiences of Xinhua Daily. As the sole Party newspaper, the Xinhua Daily not only added an indelible mark on the history of Chinese publication, but made significant contribution to the national independence and people’s liberation. Therefore, the construction of contemporary socialism would find value in the conclusion and analysis of the Anti-Japanese War propaganda campaign.
