As an advanced form of modern city,smart city can make full use of digital technology to perceive,discriminate and integrate all kinds of information existing in the urban system,make intelligent response and scientific decision to the needs of public services,economic activities and other fields of urban life,improve urban operation efficiency and create high quality urban life for the people.As a basic livelihood project,public service has always been highly valued in China.Improving the efficiency of public service supply is the core goal of smart city construction.It can effectively alleviate the pressure of urban operation and solve the problem of "urban disease".Starting from 2012,China has carried out extensive pilot work on smart cities.So far,smart cities seem to have become the future development goal of more and more cities.Therefore,whether the smart city pilot has really improved urban public service supply efficiency is a question of great value.Taking the National Smart City pilot as the starting point,based on the analysis of the connotation,current situation and theoretical relevance of smart city and public service supply,this paper establishes a panel data model based on 202 prefecture level cities from 2008 to 2019,tests the impact of smart city pilot on the efficiency of urban public service supply by using a multi-period difference-in-difference model,and ensures the accuracy of the conclusion through endogenous test and robustness test.This paper further analyzes heterogeneity based on the pilot time,regional location and urban public service endowment.Finally,policy suggestions are put forward according to the research conclusions.The research shows that the pilot construction of smart city has significantly improved the public service supply efficiency of the pilot cities.The impact of smart city pilot construction on public service supply efficiency shows regional heterogeneity.Among them,the impact is the most significant in the central region,followed by the East,and the effect is not significant in the West.The effect of smart city pilot on improving the efficiency of public service supply shows differences in different batches of pilot cities.The effect is significant in the first and second batches of pilot cities,but not in the third batch of pilot cities.In addition,the impact of smart city pilot on public services supply efficiency is heterogeneous in the city’s own public service endowment.In cities with high public service endowment,the pilot plays a more significant role in improving the efficiency of public service supply.Therefore,the smart city pilot fails to promote the equalization of public services on the whole.According to the research conclusions,this paper puts forward corresponding policy suggestions,such as improving the construction quality of smart cities,promoting the coordinated supply of multiple subjects,and increasing policy support for the western region and areas with low public service endowment.This is of certain significance for China to adjust the development strategy and planning of smart cities,improve the supply capacity of public services and achieve the equalization of public services.
