ASEAN And Myanmar’s National Security Challenges,Its Position,Role And Influence

The ruling government of Myanmar has tried to develop stable and friendly relations with its neighbors.The re-engagement of Myanmar with the international community to strengthen its integration and reform of the global economy has political,security,social and geopolitical impacts for ASEAN.ASEAN reaffirmed the continued support for the efforts of Myanmar to bring peace,stability,uphold the rule of law,maintain unity and reconciliation between different communities,and ensure sustainable and equitable growth in the security sector for Myanmar.The belief in ’mutual respect for democracy,sovereignty,territorial integrity,and national identity was strongly emphasized by the ASEAN members.In the interests of stability,peace,and security,Myanmar will remain an important partner for ASEAN,guided by the government for mutual benefit.It can therefore be argued that the leaders of ASEAN and Myanmar,with their respective political structures and the efforts of successive governments,are trying to maintain normal and friendly relations through diplomatic agreements.This is not only at the national level,but also at the regional stability level.Myanmar’s foreign policy gives priority to friendly relations,not only with neighboring countries but also with countries all over the world.Myanmar is situated at the crossroads of South and Southeast Asia.When they signed their group’s Bangkok Declaration of 1967,they pledged allegiance to the values of the United Nations Charter and commitment to ’peace and the rule of law’ as standards to be safeguarded.This method can also be extended to Myanmar.Thailand and Vietnam,with the backing of Cambodia and Laos,have argued for recognizing the coup on February 2021,in keeping with ASEAN’s historic noninterference stance.The use of force against unarmed people was criticized by Indonesia,Malaysia,and Singapore,who cited ASEAN member states’ Charter responsibilities to behave in "respect for basic freedoms,the promotion and preservation of human rights,and the promotion of social justice.ASEAN shielded Myanmar from international isolation and sanctions from the 1990s to the 2020s.ASEAN is the only diplomatic force capable of securing the junta’s participation in a dialogue process,maybe in tandem with Western economic pressure.Cooperation between ASEAN and the UN will allow for a more coordinated international response to Myanmar’s increasingly tense situation.If ASEAN leadership fails,the world community and individual ASEAN members will bear the brunt of the blame,weakening the organization’s regional importance.The mindset and actions of decision-makers in ASEAN and Myanmar stressed the importance of regional security for mutual benefit and reliance.As a result,I employed the qualitative analytical technique to obtain the essential information by examining data from convenient books,newspapers,journals,and online resources.In coping with their respective neighbors and their ideals,Myanmar has steadfastly followed the stability of defense policy,as well as a strong stand on foreign affairs,forging more cordial and friendly relations between nations.
