As an outstanding literary scholar,poet,calligrapher and painter of the Northern Song Dynasty,Su Shi had remarkable achievements.Based on the text of Su Shi’s poetry,this article,based on the research results achieved by previous authors,begins with the imagery,which is the basic element of poetic construction,and combines it with Su Shi’s personal life experiences to provide an overall analysis and discussion of the imagery of plum,orchids,bamboo and chrysanthemums in his poetic works.The text is divided into five chapters,plus an introduction and a conclusion,with a total of seven parts.The introductory part,i.e.the first chapter of the essay,summarises the current situation of the study of plum,orchid,bamboo and chrysanthemum imagery in Su Shi’s poetry in China,and presents the research purpose,significance and methodology of this thesis.The second chapter firstly explains the concept of "plum,orchid,bamboo and chrysanthemum" imagery,secondly defines the scope of this topic,and finally provides a longitudinal overview of the development of "plum,orchid,bamboo and chrysanthemum" imagery before Su Shi’s time,mainly in chronological order.This chapter provides a chronological overview of the use of plum,orchid,bamboo and chrysanthemum imagery by literati of various dynasties before Su Shi.The third chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the plum,orchid,bamboo and chrysanthemum imagery in Su Shi’s poetry in terms of the combination of imagery and the internal logical structure of the imagery: plum,orchid,bamboo and chrysanthemum imagery mainly appears in poetic works in combination with nature,humanities and other imagery;and according to the internal logical structure of plum,orchid,bamboo and chrysanthemum imagery,it can be divided into four categories: juxtaposition,contrast,spokes and leap.Chapter 4 analyses the thematic content of the plum,orchid,bamboo and chrysanthemum imagery in Su Shi’s poetry,dividing it into the plum imagery of perseverance,loneliness and sadness,the orchid imagery of clarity and simplicity,purity and purity,the bamboo imagery of clarity and simplicity,and the chrysanthemum imagery of poignancy and sorrow,optimism and openness,and explores the emotional connotations and personality traits of the poet through the metaphorical meaning of the symbols.Chapter 5discusses the aesthetic significance of the plum,orchid,bamboo and chrysanthemum imagery in Su Shi’s poetry,and summarises the aesthetic characteristics of his poetry in relation to the imagery: the hierarchy of the aesthetic sense of the imagery and the richness of the connotations of the imagery.The sixth chapter analyses the influence of Su Shi’s poetry on later works,starting with the landscape layout of "A Branch Beyond Bamboo",the creation of the plum pattern and the new use of old words.The concluding section summarises the insights and feelings gained in the process of writing this essay,and offers an outlook on the future of its study.As a representative of the literati of the Northern Song Dynasty,Su Shi’s poetry on the imagery of plum,orchids,bamboo and chrysanthemums is both an inheritance of the imagery used by his predecessors and an incorporation of his own creation,showing the maturity of the imagery of Northern Song poetry,and the spiritual connotation behind the imagery,the analysis of personal psychology and the reflection on personal destiny are important supporting materials for the study of Su Shi.
