The plum flower,orchid,bamboo and chrysanthemum(the Four Gentlemen)not only symbolize moral integrity but also exemplify traditional culture and national spirit.The connotation of the plum flower,orchid,bamboo and chrysanthemum as China’s traditional theme is spread far and wide in its use in various fields of art and culture.As historic folk woodcarving art also exemplifies traditional culture and national spirit,wood carving art and the “four gentlemen” theme complement each other well.With such a rich spiritual and cultural connotation,the Four Gentlemen theme and wood carving art combine to form art with incomparable charm.Wood carving art and the Four Gentlemen theme have folk characteristics,but also have extraordinary character.The Four Gentlemen theme in the art of wood carving may not always be perfectly depicted,but wood carving art gives the plum flower,orchid,bamboo and chrysanthemum theme of the "four gentlemen" a cultural connotation and represents the spirit of this theme in three dimensions.Based on the history and development of Chinese folk wood carving art,this paper expounds on the significance of this combination in writing.Based on the study of the plum flower,orchid,bamboo and chrysanthemum theme in woodcarving’s spiritual connotation and cultural heritage,tracing it to the Ming and Qing Dynasties,the Four Gentlemen theme is studied according to its specific and profound expression in wood carving art.By means of the bold association of the relationship between the theme of plum flower,orchid,bamboo,chrysanthemum and folk woodcarving art,the double charm of art and culture is shown through this combination.Finally,through the above research and analysis,the combination of traditional theory and modern concepts launches this theme as applied in woodcarving art practice.
