The Contemporary Cross-Disciplinary Creation Of Liaozhai Zhiyi-Nie Xiaoqian

This paper adopts a cross-category research approach to explore the phenomenon of cross-border adaptations in contemporary adaptations of traditional art,ultimately landing on the practical issues of contemporary art dissemination.Nie Xiaoqian,one of the most widely circulated works from the ancient Chinese literary classic Liaozhai Zhiyi,has seen a cross-category shift from literature to film,theatre and opera,and a media transformation from the written medium to the stage medium and electronic media in contemporary communication.When artists create cross-category adaptations of Nie Xiaoqian,they usually start with the work’s story text,presentation and methods of transmission.They often retain one or two of the main threads and key plot points of the original work,and then reinvent the story text by incorporating contemporary elements and the artistic vision of the creator.They also choose the appropriate art form,creative medium and technical medium to express themselves,taking into account their own strengths and the needs of the content.The involvement of the medium has allowed the adaptation of Nie Xiaoqian to blossom,surpassing the original text in terms of expression and its own value.The many cross-category works of Nie Xiaoqian can be classified according to their medium,and can be broadly divided into two categories: electronic works and stage works.The electronic media works of Nie Xiaoqian,represented by film and television,are characterised by their flexibility in time and space and their visual effects,which enhance the expressiveness of the story through the graphic design of light,colour and special effects.Stage media artworks such as theatre and opera,on the other hand,can take advantage of the natural spatial advantages of the stage medium with music and dance expressions to engage with the audience emotionally.There is an inextricable link between cross-disciplinary creation and artistic communication.The dissemination of Nie Xiaoqian’s cross-category works is characterised by a predominantly online and de-circularised distribution.In the process of artistic communication,the interdisciplinary works of Nie Xiaoqian play different roles in the different communication chains.As communication content,the cross-disciplinary works are created by the artists on the basis of the artistic formulae of the disciplines,using technical and material media to create a textual medium,which is then disseminated through electronic and stage media,giving rise to a new language of artistic expression;as a communication medium,the cross-disciplinary works of Nie Xiaoqian carry and embody the current concepts and trends of artistic creation,with artistic and commercial,aesthetic and economic values in a dynamic balance.While pursuing harmony in a dynamic balance between artistry and commerce,aesthetic value and economic value,the excellent traditional culture it carries also nourishes the times on a spiritual level.Cross-discipline will become an inevitable trend in the creation and dissemination of art.
