Research On "Cross-media Narrative" In Xu Bing’s Artistic Creation

Xu Bing is a renowned independent artist in contemporary China and one of the most influential Chinese artists overseas.He has received the highest award in the American cultural community-the Mac Arthur Award,and has been awarded the Medal of Art by the US State Department.Xu Bing is a thoughtful artist,with a scholarly aura that even surpasses an artist’s temperament.He is good at thinking and can express the problems found through his unique artistic language.He is skilled at breaking through traditional media and utilizing the connection between media to create creative works that break through the dimensions of time and space.This article will focus on the construction of "cross media" in Xu Bing’s artistic creation,using "narrative" as a hidden thread that runs through the entire text,exploring how artists establish their own narrative world through cross media narrative,and thus using cross media narrative to showcase the artistic characteristics of Xu Bing’s artistic creation.This article starts with the theory of "cross media narrative" and discusses the classification of Xu Bing’s artistic works,exploring how Xu Bing embodies "cross media nature" in his artistic creation,and how this theory constructs narrative language in the practice of artists.This paper is mainly divided into five chapters for discussion:Chapter 1 explains and defines the concept of cross media narrative,summarizes the performance characteristics and essential elements of cross media narrative in artistic creation;The second chapter analyzes the reasons for the formation of "cross media narrative" in Xu Bing’s artistic creation,from exploring the media to seeking his artistic style,and then to reflecting on himself,gradually promoting his creative approach of "cross media narrative".The social background and growth environment,traditional concepts and national character,as well as the influence of Western context,have become the "meta background" of his artistic creation;The third and fourth chapters are also the focus of this article’s discussion.The third chapter lists the narrative types of "cross media" in Xu Bing’s artistic creation.Starting from the cross media transformation from literary text to visual text,to the cross media transformation from graphic text,and then to the cross media representation of graphic symbolization,finally forming a cross media type of image composite.Presenting the close relationship between media and the possibility of crossing between media in Xu Bing’s works.The fourth chapter delves into the "cross media" narrative style in Xu Bing’s artistic creation based on the analysis of narrative types.Combining with the expressive characteristics of cross media narrative in artistic creation,the artist’s works are integrated and explained.It points out that Xu Bing uses the non-linear narrative methods created by various media,uses Chinese traditional culture to express intertextuality,opens the open mode of social interaction through audience,environment and politics,and presents the diversified forms of cigarette making materials from the three levels of historical context,space utilization and creative theme;Chapter 5 summarizes and summarizes the content of "cross media narrative" in Xu Bing’s artistic creation,including the displayed Chinese connotation,the indicated artistic issues,and the established public values.It mainly starts from the issue of cross media narrative itself and combines contemporary context to point out the exemplary value of "cross media narrative" in Xu Bing’s artistic creation.Through the discussion of this article,it provides possibilities for the research of contemporary art in the field of cross media narrative,and constructs a new direction for understanding Xu Bing and his artistic works.
