Action Research Of English Underachievers Based On Reviewing Period In Grade 3 Of Senior High School

With the rapid development of China and acceleration of globalization,every Chinese citizen is supposed to have a higher English ability.Nevertheless,The English grammar and vocabularies are difficult in senior high school,which results in an increasing number of English underachievers,or we can call them students with English learning difficulties.And such English underachievers will reach relatively the biggest number in grade three of senior high school.However,according to the learning period,most of the study focus on the underachievers in primary and junior middle school,few about students in senior high school.According to subject,many researches pay more attention to underachievers who have trouble learning math and physics,few about underachievers who have trouble learning English.In addition,most of the current study about English underachievers are related to a specific type of English exercise,few about action research.Therefore,it is of great significance to seek and help those students during this period and find out the reasons that caused their difficulty in English learning to better equip themselves to enter college entrance examination.Furthermore,it is of great benefit to dig out the solutions and conclude useful strategies about transforming those underachievers.This study is based on the investigation of two senior grade three students(underachiever A and underachiever D)in Tong Wen Middle School.The specific research questions are as follows:(1)What are the current learning situation for English underachievers in senior grade three?(2)What factors caused students in senior grade three to have difficulty in learning English?(3)How are the effects of transforming the English underachievers in senior grade three through the action research?First,elementary interviews are used on students who ranked in the last ten percent of their class to get a basic understanding of how these English underachievers feel and behave in their daily life.Then,through class observation and teachers’ interviews to have a more thorough understanding of why these students will have English learning difficulties.Combined with the analysis above,it is concluded that most English underachievers have the following causes leading to poor performance in study such as laziness,poor self-discipline,lack of time and efforts in English,low interest or motivation,poor foundation or improper learning strategy.Then,after having a general understanding of students with English learning difficulties,two representative English underachievers were chosen.The author intends to carry out the action research which lasts three month on these two English underachievers.The results show that underachievers could be transformed under certain circumstances.In addition,during the transformation of the two English underachievers,there are some other findings: Firstly,a trusting relationship between the teacher and students will smoothly enhance the development of the project.Secondly,only by changing their learning attitudes can the teaching have a longer impact on them.Thirdly,quick improvements can be seen through correcting the wrong learning methods used by students.The innovative part of this study is that the research is conducted during the year of senior three while students are faced with the College Entrance Examination.This is a special period when students will study harder than ever before to improve themselves and get higher scores.The study makes full use of such a specific time and the eagerness for better test performance of students.
