Stephen Owen,an American sinologist,is a world-famous Chinese poetry researcher who has been teaching poetry at Harvard University for many years.Given public classes on poetry and compiled widely-used textbooks such as An Anthology of Chinese Literature,Beginnings to 1911.However,previous studies have mainly focused on his views and achievements in poetry research,and rarely examined his methods of interpreting and teaching poetry from the perspective of international Chinese language education.This article takes Stephen Owen’s teaching materials and teaching processes as the main research object,summarizes Stephen Owen’s methods of interpreting poetry by analyzing Stephen Owen’s lecture notes,teaching videos,and combining reading important literature.This article finds that Stephen Owen mainly interprets poetry from three levels:First,on the value level,he interprets poetry from the perspective of Chinese culture and human value discovery;Secondly,at the content level,poetry is interpreted using a "non fictional" storytelling method;Thirdly,at the formal level,use cross-cultural understanding methods that combine both inside and outside of this article.Although Stephen Owen’s poetry interpretation and teaching has gradually formed in his own language and cultural environment,it may not be fully applicable to the current teaching of poetry in international Chinese language education;the methods and concepts of his interpreting are still worthy of exploration and reference.This article believes that,in view of the current problems in poetry teaching,specific enlightenment includes the following points: First,attach importance to displaying the cultural value of poetry;Secondly,reasonably use the "non fictional" story method to interpret;Third,the application of close reading and cross-cultural understanding in poetry teaching. |
