A Report On The E-C Translation Of "Avalokite(?)vara And The Longing To Return Home"

Since the onset of reform and opening up in 1978,international sinology has grown to be a major focus of the Chinese academic community.Meanwhile,scholars have also shown great interest in Dunhuang studies,which is inextricably linked to sinology.In view of this,this translation project selects the renowned sinologist Imre Galambos’ 2022 paper “Avalokite(?)vara and the Longing to Return Home: Stein Painting 3 from Dunhuang” as the translation material.Professor Galambos’ paper re-examines the content and manner of writing of the inscription in a silk painting from Dunhuang and reveals the homesickness of people living away from their native land,the contents of regime changes in Dunhuang,Buddhism,and cultural relics studies are also involved in it,and thus the focus of this translation project is on the precise transmission of information and target readers’ reception.Based on the aforementioned characteristics,the translator suggests solutions from four aspects under the guidance of Reception Theory represented by Hans Robert Jauss and Wolfgang Iser.First,the translation strategy of domestication and the technique of omission are applied to make the translation more consistent with conventional expressions of Chinese readers.Secondly,the translator takes full account of Chinese readers’ different horizons of expectations and adopts annotation and amplification to further develop readers’ former experience.Then,the translator flexibly employs the free translation method and distinct techniques to achieve the fusion of horizons.Finally,there are two approaches to dealing with the “blanks” in the source text: retaining the blanks or filling the blanks.This report aims to provide a reference for the translation of overseas works on Dunhuang studies,so as to attract more researchers to participate in the study of E-C translation of such works and to aid in the diffusion and growth of Dunhuang culture.
