The etiquette of dining is a gradually formed social custom among people,primarily referring to dining etiquette and common sense at the dining table.For Vietnamese students studying Chinese,mastering Chinese dining etiquette not only contributes to their understanding of Chinese culture but also helps them overcome cultural barriers and improve their cross-cultural communication skills.This study compares the dining etiquette cultures of China and Vietnam through literature review and real-life experiences.Based on the comparative results,this study explores the teaching content and methods of Chinese dining etiquette culture for Vietnamese students.Finally,a survey of 100 Vietnamese students and interviews with three Vietnamese Chinese language teachers are conducted to verify the scientificity and feasibility of the teaching plan.In Chapter 2,this study delves into the similarities and differences between Chinese and Vietnamese dining etiquette through literature investigation and comparative analysis.Vietnamese dining etiquette is greatly influenced by Chinese etiquette in many aspects,such as sitting upright,eating elegantly,being hospitable,paying attention to others’ dining needs,and avoiding speaking with food in mouth.Although there are similarities between the dining etiquette of the two countries,some differences also arise due to changes in time and cultural evolution,such as the order of serving dishes,serving guests with rice,and the placement of a whole fish,a chicken,or a duck,as well as differences in pre-meal etiquette,toasting,alcohol and tea drinking.In Chapter 3,this study designs a questionnaire survey on Chinese dining etiquette culture to understand Vietnamese Chinese learners’ interest in Chinese dining etiquette,teaching methods,areas for improvement in class,and their understanding of Chinese dining etiquette.The survey results show that most learners are interested in Chinese dining etiquette and hope to receive more related pictures,props,videos,and materials in their cultural classes.Teachers can design teaching content based on students’ lack of understanding or misunderstanding of Chinese banquet etiquette,and help Vietnamese students gain a deeper understanding of Chinese dining etiquette culture.In chapter 4,this study employed the interview method to gather opinions from three Vietnamese Chinese language teachers regarding effective content and methods for teaching Chinese dining etiquette.Building upon the previous research findings,chapter 5 presents a specialized teaching module for Chinese dining etiquette,following the principles of adaptability,communicativeness,practicality,interest,and interactivity.This teaching module consists of six teaching contents,namely seating arrangement,ordering,serving order,dining etiquette,conversation,and leaving the table,arranged in a logical sequence.During the teaching process,multimedia teaching method and performance-based cultural teaching method were used.The aim of this study is to significantly enhance the Vietnamese Chinese language learners’ awareness of Chinese dining etiquette culture,eliminate their misunderstandings about Chinese dining etiquette culture,and improve their ability to apply Chinese dining etiquette culture,in order to provide some reference for future dining etiquette culture teaching.
