“Prisoners’ Bricks”,also known as “Prisoners’ Burial Bricks” and “Prisoners’ Tomb Bricks”,are the epitaph of the special social group of prisoners in ancient times.Based on the existing research, this paper analyzes the calligraphy style and characteristics of the brick writings of the Han Dynasty prisoners.Starting from the background, the content and the shape of Han Dynasty Prisoners’ Brick Writing, and comparing with other official writing works of Western Han Dynasty and Eastern Han Dynasty, this paper reveals the artistic style of Han Dynasty Prisoners’ Brick Writing, and strengthens the discrimination and grasp of the artistic attributes of Han Dynasty Prisoners’ Brick CalligraphyThe Brick Texts of Prisoners were probably written by lower-level craftsmen in the Han Dynasty, and naturally could not be compared with the classic engravings and epitaphs in terms of regulation, law, artistic expression and volume of engravings. However,it was exactly the unique group of engravers, conditions of engravings and the absence of strict requirements of engravings that led to a special case of artistic expression of engravings. Thus, the Brick Texts of Prisoners shows the calligraphy art style of vigor and quickness, richness and variety, and freedom and smoothness. Moreover, the idea reflected in this freewheeling, straightforward and difficult creation is exactly what contemporary calligraphy art creation needs. Finally, the author analyzes the gains and losses of Brick Calligraphy Art of Han Dynasty Prisoners and what can be used for the reference of today’s calligraphy creation by studying the specific performance and characteristics of the Brick Calligraphy art style of Han Dynasty Prisoners.
