The original text of this translation report is an excerpt from the English book Steeped in History: The Art of Tea,which combines the history of tea with art from East to West, tracing the influence of tea from its discovery in ancient China to the tea plantations in Assam today. The excerpt part: chapter eight and nine mainly introduce the historical role that tea played in trade and warfare with imperialist countries during the Qing Dynasty in China,as well as in colonial India and the East India Company, and the historical culture of tea at that time. The original text,as an informative text introducing tea culture and history, has a rather scientific and rigorous language with logical statements, and contains a large number of historical and geographical terms, which should be translated with the focus on information delivery to ensure the acceptability and historical accuracy of the translation. Therefore, the translator takes communicative translation and semantic translation in Newmark’s translation theory as the guiding principles, specifically adopts translation methods such as addition, substitution, sequence adjustment and division, and analyses cases on some typical texts from the lexical, syntactic and texual levels. The report focuses on the communicative purpose and effect of translation, and breaks the form of the original text by adjusting the wording and changing the syntax,so as to better realize the communicative function of translation.
