The group paintings of "Huangshan" are composed of six works,"Huangshan Pine","Xianpenglai","Huangshan Cloud","Huangshan Fog","Huangshan Lan" and "Huangshan Cliff",which were created in the 80 s and 90 s of the 20 th century, spanning more than ten years. The work is Zhao Zongzao’s attempt to simplify complexity for a period of time after his fourth trip to Huangshan.Although the "Yellow Mountain" group painting has been well received in domestic and international art circles,Zhao Zongzao believes that this is just a non-failed attempt in his artistic career.Even so,the information of the times revealed behind the work and the series of influences on the printmaking department of Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts in the 80 s are also worth investigating. The group paintings use concise language and few colors that are far from the previous creative style to express the ingenious pines, strange stones, and sea of clouds on the top of the Yellow Mountain. And the use of the wood grain texture printing method accidentally found in the watermark print,so that the picture is more vibrant and charming. The purpose of this article is to study the language and spirit of the times through the form of the "Yellow Mountain" group paintings.Based on the interview with Zhao Zongzao, the collection and sorting of a large number of books and archives, and the practical research combined with the copying of "re-engraving",the author conducts a comprehensive analysis of the group paintings of "Huangshan",starting from the schema, technique and content, leading the author’s thinking on the attempt at abstraction and formal beauty in the context of the times.
