This thesis is a translation practice report,and the source text of this translation practice comes from the biography Ten American Girls from History,written by American writer Kate Dickinson Sweetser.The translator selects the sixth chapter--Clara Barton: "The Angel of the Battlefields" as the translation material.The sixth chapter mainly narrates the contributions made by Clara Barton to her family,school,army,women’s rights and the international aid in her life,and her selfless dedication and humanitarian spirit are carried out in the whole text.Through the writer’s description of the biographer,the reader is presented with a great woman who had devoted her life to the cause of humanitarianism,whose selfless spirit is worth learning.Based on the functional equivalence theory,the translator tries to find out the methods suitable for the translation of such source texts from the perspective of language and cultural differences between English and Chinese from three aspects: vocabulary,sentences and texts.At the lexical level,the source text uses adjectives,polysemy and culture-loaded words.In order to better convey the original information and reveal the features of the source text,the translator adopts translation methods such as literal translation,word meaning extension and annotation.At the sentence level,long sentences,passive sentences and rhetorical sentences are used in the source text.In order to keep the language style of the sentences,the translator adopts such translation methods as word order conversion and voice adjustment.At the textual level,such translation methods as addition are used to keep the style equivalence and form equivalence between the translated text and the source text.Through this translation practice,the translator has found that: firstly,Nida’s functional equivalence theory can provide a strong practical guidance for the translation of biographical texts;secondly,the translator must take into account the translation at the lexical,syntactical and textual levels to accurately convey the information of the source text;thirdly this translation practice report with the analysis of some specific cases can provide some reference and help for the translation of biographical texts.
