On Subtitle Translation Of The 2 Broke Girls From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence Theory

With the acceleration of globalization,the exchanges between China and other countries have become more and more frequent since the reform and opening up.In terms of cultural exchange,the mutual import and export of film and television works are particularly standing out.High quality subtitle translation is an indispensable part of it.Film and television subtitle translation is different from traditional translation since it is limited by time and space.During translation practice,translators need to take the above factors into consideration.As we all know,subtitles should be concise because subtitles with obscure meaning may easily affect the audience’s appreciation.Therefore,syntactic simplification and proper use of expressions such as slang and idioms are very important for subtitle translators during translation practice.In this paper,translations from two well-known domestic film and television websites,Tencent Video and Renren Video,were comparatively analyzed from four aspects.At the end of the study,it is found that the Chinese version of Renren Video which is analyzed from the perspective of Functional Equivalence theory,put forward by the great American linguist,Eugene Nida,turns out to be more appropriate.It makes the audience better interact with the sitcom and achieves functional equivalence.By analyzing mistakes that occurred in the E-C translation of the American sitcom The 2 Broke Girls from the aspects of words,sentences,texts and styles and analyzing translation strategies adopted in subtitle translation of this sitcom from the perspective of the Functional Equivalence theory,this paper hopes to provide solutions to problems that will easily encountered in translation practice,thus emphasizing the importance of Functional Equivalence theory in translation strategy selection and future study.Therefore,this paper holds that by referring Functional Equivalence theory in translation practice,the quality of subtitles translation will be greatly improved.
