In the perspective of cultural globalization, cultural communication gradually transforms into the communication of cultural symbols,so it is of great significance to view cultural communication from the perspective of semiotics.Cultural transmission is bound to spread the most representative culture.Folk culture comes from human’s daily life. Its closeness and primacy are excellent Windows to display Chinese culture,so it is a typical representative of Chinese culture.Folk culture runs through all aspects of teaching Chinese as a foreign language. In this paper,audio-visual materials related to teachersstudents and classrooms are selected as the main research object, focusing on folk culture symbols in teaching materials of Chinese as a foreign language to study folk culture transmission.Based on this,in the context of cultural symbolization and relying on relevant theories of semiotics, this paper studies the transmission of folk culture by referring to symbols of folk culture in audio-visual teaching materials of middle and advanced Chinese.Firstly, the folk culture and folk culture symbols are defined and classified, and audio-visual teaching materials are selected as the research carrier and the reasons for their use as the research carrier are explained.Secondly, the folk cultural symbols in the audio-visual teaching materials of middle and advanced Chinese are mainly presented in three aspects: language text, picture and video.Furthermore, the number of symbols of folk culture in these three ways of presentation is analyzed statistically, which lays a foundation for further exploration of the transmission path of folk culture.Next,it is explained that folk symbols carry folk meaning and are a bridge between encoding and decoding.Folk symbols also have the characteristics of daily life, which is why folk cultural symbols can spread folk culture. On this basis, this paper uses Hall’s encoding and decoding theory to study the transmission process of folk culture symbols, which is the process of encoding cultural symbols and then decoding by students, and completes the transmission process of folk culture through communication between disseminators and audiences. Finally, through questionnaire survey and interview analysis,we can understand the cognitive situation of folk culture among international students,so as to better understand the audience’s decoding process and the effect achieved by decoding.Based on the analysis and statistics of folk culture symbols in the above textbooks and the results of questionnaire survey, this paper discusses the advantages and disadvantages of folk culture in the transmission of Chinese learners, and puts forward reasonable suggestions for the transmission path of folk culture from the perspectives of coding and decoding, symbol extraction and transmission.
