The 20 th century was a century of cultural fusion, and the field of music was both complex and unpredictable. It is difficult to explain or summarize the reasons behind the various musical and cultural phenomena and their characteristics with one or two qualifiers, but it is undeniable that these "pluralisms" injected fresh vitality into artistic life.Ragtime is a style of piano music, referred to as "ragtime",which is also translated as "misbeat music" or "loose beat music",based on the black music, fused with some European music characteristics, forming a musical style marked by syncopation and improvisation. The development of ragtime music not only became the driving force behind the development of American jazz music, but also reflected part of the development of American black culture and the civil rights movement. As the "King of Ragtime",Scott Joplin’s works are very representative in the same period,so this paper selects some of Scott Joplin’s classic works as the research object, and uses the methods of documentary research and personal practice to study and explore his artistic characteristics and performance techniques, hoping to have a deeper understanding of his own performance and to provide a better understanding of his own performance.I hope to improve my own performance and to offer some help to players who love ragtime piano works. In this paper,we will present the study of Joplin’s ragtime technique in three parts. The first part is a general overview of the historical development of ragtime music and its influence on American jazz,Joplin’s life and his main works;the second part introduces the artistic characteristics of Joplin’s ragtime piano works in terms of rhythm, melody, tonality and harmony, composition structure, and common types of accompaniment;the third part is a study of the performance techniques of Joplin’s ragtime piano works, combining the score and personal experience. The third part is a study of Joplin Ragtime’s piano technique, combining examples of scores and personal experience, and summarizing the study in terms of key touch, syncopation, pedal use, octave technique, playing diatonic and chordal techniques, and the handling of musical emotions.
