Ragtime is an American style of popular music that flourished between 1890 and World War I.Ragtime is widely regarded as the precursor of jazz and has had an important influence on the development of jazz since then.It originated in the South and Midwest of the United States,forming in African American communities in other cities such as St.Louis,Missouri.As the origin of "New Orleans" music,"Stride" Piano and other styles,instrumental rag is characterized by "oom-pah" rhythm and syncopated rhythm.Scott Joplin,the "king of ragtime",was an important figure in the development of instrumental rag,and his typical musical work Maple Leaf Rag not only included the above musical characteristics,but also brought important influence to the later generations.This paper will take the Maple Leaf Rag by Scott Joplin as the research object,through the characteristics of syncopated rhythm classification and the characteristics of rhythm classification to study and analyze its playing skills,so as to explore what instrumental rag characteristics this music inherited and Joplin’s own musical vocabulary on top of it.This article begins with the overview of Scott Joplin’s life and works.In the second chapter,the author explains the typical musical examples of Maple Leaf Rag one by one,analyzes the playing skills and characteristics of Maple Leaf Rag,and describes in detail the key role played by this song in the formation and development of instrumental rag style.The third chapter discusses how to apply the characteristics of instrumental rag in the author’s original instrumental rag works.It is hoped that on the basis of the research in this paper,the development of instrumental rag will be considered,which will not only provide help for the study of the origin of jazz,but also provide a theoretical basis with reference for this style.
