| The zither is one of the most important national instruments in China, with a unique flavour and a history of over two thousand years. As various outstanding composers have explored the zither repertoire,a trend of evolution from traditional to modern has gradually emerged, and its diversity points to the direction of future development. The concerto’Waves of the Sea’ is a modern piece composed by the young composer Wang Rui,based on the aesthetic ideas in the ’Twenty-four Poems’,a monograph on poetry by the Tang Dynasty literary scholar Sikongtu. The composer fuses Western compositional techniques with Chinese folk tunings, reflecting a unique creative concept, and this work has been loved by many performers since it was first released. The piece combines a variety of zither techniques with piano accompaniment to depict the magnificence of the sea and to express the author’s nostalgia for his homeland. In this paper, the composition and interpretation of the piece are used as the starting point to analyse the structure of the work and the author’s own understanding of it.The text is divided into four chapters:Chapter 1: Overview of the work;Chapter 2: Analysis of the composition and passages;Chapter 3: Analysis of the technique in the work;and Chapter4: The performer’s own experience of the second composition.I hope that the above will be of some help to those who play this work. |
