| As ecocriticism research continues to deepen,a cross-disciplinary research trend emerges,integrating ecocriticism with literature,culture,and education studies.This article is a translation practice report of the Canadian scholar Greg Garrard’s anthology“Teaching Ecocriticism and Green Cultural Studies.” The anthology proposes a new perspective that combines ecology and literature,explores how to teach foreign languages in the context of ecocriticism,and studies new media,film,and popular culture based on ecocriticism.This report elaborates on how to translate academic texts on ecocriticism teaching and research under the guidance of Nida’s functional equivalence theory,flexibly applying various translation strategies.The original text is an informative academic research text,with a vocabulary that includes a large number of professional terms such as names and titles.Such sentences as long and difficult sentences,passive sentences,periodical sentences,and loose sentence structures are frequently used.When translating,one must not only understand the content of the original text but also present the information accurately and appropriately to the target readers.Guided by Nida’s functional equivalence theory,the author translates names using principles such as transliteration and backtranslation+character transcoding,determines the translation of terms through methods such as consulting online dictionaries and terminology databases,and translates other related vocabulary using techniques such as paraphrasing,amplification,and conversion.In terms of syntactic translation,passive sentences are translated using active sentences,passive sentences,and judgment sentences,while English long and difficult sentences are translated using methods such as literal translation,reordering,and sentence splitting.Based on context analysis,proper verbal and grammatical means are used to achieve cohesion and coherence at the discourse level.By flexibly applying various translation techniques and freeing from the constraints of the original language surface structure,the author strives to preserve the information of the original text and at the same time stress the response of the translated text’s readers so as to achieve functional equivalence in translation.Through this Chinese translation practice and the writing of the practice report,the author has improved their ability to translate ecocriticism research texts,deepened their understanding of functional equivalence translation theory and ecocriticism translation teaching research.It is hoped that the result can provide a reference for scholars for their future academic text translation and ecocriticism research. |
