Study On The Image Of "Bottle Flower" In Chen Hongshou’s Painting

"Bottle Flowers" is a conventional term in Chinese flower arrangement art since the Song Dynasty.In the Ming Dynasty,bottle flowers became one of the most representative "long-lived objects" due to its combination of the aesthetic beauty of life and elegant culture,making literati and aristocrats become "enthusiastic fans" of flower arrangement.Chen Hongshou was also a lover of bottle flower art,and there are quite a few bottle flower works in his paintings.Therefore,this article takes the bottle flowers in Chen Hongshou’s paintings as the starting point to understand Chen Hongshou’s artistic style and the aesthetic taste and connotation behind it.The paper is divided into three parts.In the first part,the background of Chen Hongshou’s entry into painting about bottle flowers is analyzed.The development of Neo-Confucianism,the trend towards retro and playfulness all made bottle flowers an object of appreciation for literati.Coupled with Chen Hongshou’s love for flowers,it became inevitable that "Bottle Flowers" would be included in his paintings.In the second part,based on the images of "Bottle Flowers" in Chen Hongshou’s paintings,the paper analyzes the selection and matching of the flowers,the types of images,and formal analysis,fully reflecting Chen’s pursuit of "ancient" and "elegant" in his art,as well as his desire for innovative change.The depiction of rust on copper vessels is a significant difference between Chen’s "Bottle Flower" works and those of his contemporaries.In the third part,the paper explores the aesthetic taste of Chen Hongshou’s "Bottle Flowers" and their specific,individual meanings in his life.The "Bottle Flowers" in Chen Hongshou’s paintings demonstrate the expression of sensory pleasure and aesthetics in daily life by literati.The dual nature of Chen’s identity and the secular tendency of the Ming and Qing dynasties make the "Bottle Flowers" enjoyable for both the refined and common people.Most importantly,through the analysis of Chen’s "Bottle Flowers," one can appreciate how Chen Hongshou uses flower arrangements to convey emotions and project his spiritual personality,using the fragrance world to dispel complex internal struggles.After the transition from Ming to Qing dynasties,the "Bottle Flowers" in his paintings represented a sentiment for those enduring difficult times together.
