A Report On The C-E Translation Of Business Contracts From The Perspective Of Register Theory

As the development of economic trade is more and more globalized,accurate translation of business contract can contribute to the legal effect of context.This report is discussing the C-E translation of business contracts from the perspective of register theory.The contract texts are selected from my translation work: Supplement Agreement for Outsourcing Products Sale Contract of Geely,Labor Contract of Shandong Huge Oral Material Co.,Ltd.With the guide of Halliday’s Register theory,this report has analysed the translation work.As is found in the report,specific features of business contract text,such as lawful vocabularies,rigid sentences and chapters made of articles and clauses,build a distinguished legal discourse.So,this paper adopts the Register theory of Halliday to analyze the chosen contract texts in terms of field,tenor and mode,so as to bridge translation work and theory and make contribution to business contract translation study.As we know,qualified translation work must have equality in contents and forms.Such equality turns out to be equal in field,tenor and mode,which means that the registers of source language and target language should be identical.While there might have some varieties in language forms,such as different voice and sentence length.This report is composed by four chapters.Chapter one is translation texts description which introduces the background,functions of the contract texts that are translated.It has also demonstrated requirements from entrusting company,and analyzed text features of business contract.In second chapter translation process is described,including prework,translation process and proofreading after translation.The third chapter is case study,the main part of this report.The Register theory are applied to study translation equivalence in terms of field,tenor and mode in example sentences selected from contracts.This chapter will demonstrate how Register theory guides translation practice,such as strategies,skills.Chapter four includes discoveries,suggestions,and problems confronted during essay writing.After the translation and the analysis work,I have obtained deeper understanding of translation and the Register Theory,hoping to benefit further business contract translation work and study.
