Signed Language Interpreting in the Workplace is an academic work on signed language interpreting,which illustrates complexity of the interpreter’s role and responsibilities in the workplace domain.The translation material comes from chapter one to chapter three of this book,the content of which covering the role of the signed language interpreter in the workplace setting,deaf people’s experience of employment and the principal themes in workplace discourse.The translation material belongs to academic texts,being featured with the plentiful use of terminology,nominalization,passive voice,long and complex sentences etc.Guided by Reiss’ s(2000)text typology,this report aims to explore effective translation techniques for translating academic texts in sign language interpreting.According to text typology,the ST belongs to informative text.The language dimension of informative text is logic,and the translation should transmit accurate and full information in fluent target language.Built on text typology,the reporter summarizes the translation standards of informative text from the perspectives of content and language.From the perspective of content,the translation should convey accurate and complete content of the ST.By using annotation technique,the information contained in terminology is accurately illustrated and conveyed.By conversion technique,the passive voice and nominal structures are shifted,which makes information in the ST more acceptable for readers.By addition technique,the implicit information in the ST is supplemented By addition technique,the implicit information in the ST is supplemented,so as to transmit complete information for target readers.From the perspective of language,the translation should be oriented to target language to straighten up logical relation in a smooth way.By division and restructuring techniques,the components of long and complex sentences are split and reorganized,so that the translation is more in line with the habits of target readers.Moreover,by combination technique,the implicit logical relation is clarified,and the information of the ST is conveyed concisely and smoothly.Guided by Reiss’ s text typology,this report analyzes the translation of Signed Language Interpreting in the Workplace from the perspectives of translation content and language,and summarize corresponding translation techniques.The reporter hopes it can provide some references for translating academic texts on signed language interpreting.
