Causes Of Over Redundancy And Strategies In Spanish-chinese Consecutive Interpreting

Redundancy is an inherent characteristic of language.Since interpretation is one kind of inter-lingual communication activity,it contains redundancy too.The redundancy in interpreting usually refers to those meaningless words,phrases,or sentences produced by interpreters due to time and cognitive pressure.In interpreting activities,too many redundancies hinder the efficient transmission of information,lower the communicative efficiency of interpreting,and thus affect the quality of interpreting and the experience of the audience.In the mock conference of “The New Economy and the Future of SMEs”,the author found a large amount of redundancy in the interpretation,which lowers the quality of interpretation.So,based on the mock conference,this thesis aims to analyze the causes and coping strategies of over redundancy in the case to provide a reference for the writer and other interpreters.The author first explores the redundancy concept in information theory proposed by Claude Elwood Shannon,and how it is applied in translation and interpretation studies.Next,the author summarizes over redundancy in the case into four categories: semantic repetition,self-correction,meaningless fillers,and unnecessary explanations.Then the author reaches the conclusion that the over redundancy comes from a lack of deverbalization,low-level automation,inappropriate note-taking,and bad language habits.Finally,to cope with the causes above,the author proposed five coping strategies:practicing paraphrasing and summarizing;expanding the storage of bilingual expressions and encyclopedic knowledge;simplifying notes-taking and enhancing its logic;identifying and analyzing the redundancy in the source language;strengthening self-monitoring when interpreting.
