This thesis takes the 2013 Brookings Institution Interview on Dr.William A.Haseltine about “How to Control Health Care Costs” as an example to study the causes of over-redundancy in English-Chinese consecutive interpretation and propose strategies to deal with it.The source and interpreted language of the mock meeting is transcribed, and relevant literature is referred to classify the over-redundancy in this case into five categories:Self-repair,Repetition,Improper Structure,Slow in Speech and Fillers, among which the first three are semantic over-redundancies and the last two belong to phonological over-redundancy.Self-repair includes different information repairs, appropriateness repairs and error repairs.Repetition includes pronoun repetition, tautological repetition and conceptual repetition.Through analysing the above over-redundancies,four major causes are identified: lack of pre-interpretation preparation, insufficient accumulation of Chinese words, influence of the source language and poor speaking habits.Strategies are proposed accordingly to address these problems.First, improve pre-interpretation preparation from six aspects: enriching background knowledge, familiarising with topics, preparing speech scripts, memorizing terms, understanding the target audience and preparing equipment.Second, enhance the accumulation of Chinese through daily "reading, listening and practicing".Third, improve the ability of "deverbalization".Fourth, strengthen self-monitoring.
