| Redundancy is an indispensable and fixed feature of language, which is equally prevalent in interpreting.A moderate amount of redundancy can reduce information loss and facilitate communication, but the tolerance of redundancy is relatively low in consecutive interpreting. In the German-Chinese consecutive interpretation mock conference "Translating for Swiss Federal Parliament: where multilingualism and politics collide",the author’s interpretation was repeatedly over-redundant and did not meet the requirements of conciseness and efficiency. Therefore, this mock conference is an appropriate example to analyse the various types of over-redundancy in translation, and to explore the causes and strategies for dealing with them. The thesis starts with the definition of redundancy based on information theory. After reading the literature, the author goes through the relevant research on redundancy in the field of general linguistic communication, and finally focuses on the concept and classification of redundancy in consecutive interpreting.Combined with the author’s personal interpretation practice, the excessive redundancy in this case is divided into four categories: meaningless fillers,self-repair,repetition,unnecessary explanation, with a total of 228 cases. After listening back to the recordings and analysing the transcribed texts, the author explores four aspects of the causes, namely, listening comprehension obstacles, improper note taking, inadequate preparation of background knowledge and poor expression habits, and corresponding examples are given for analysis.Accordingly, some useful strategies are put forward, including improving active listening, enhancing the effectiveness of note-taking,being fully prepared for interpretation and strengthening Chinese expressions, each of which contains practical methods.Through the above discussion, the author hopes to deepen his understanding of redundancy in interpretation and provide guidance for effectively avoiding redundancy in the future, which is also helpful for other interpretation learners with similar problems,so as to continuously improve the quality of interpretation. |
