Consecutive interpreting gives interpreters more time to understand, translate and integrate information than simultaneous interpreting, and therefore has a higher standard of conciseness, speed and accuracy.Redundancy is a common problem in Chinese-English consecutive interpreting, making it an appropriate study subject.Study on redundancy of Chinese-English consecutive interpreting can help disclose the causes of redundancy and find potential solutions, thus providing better interpreting strategies that lead to more conciseness and higher quality.Taking the mock conference “Global Trends of Urbanization and China’s Issues” as an example, the author analyses the causes of redundancy in Chinese-English consecutive interpreting in terms of three common redundancy problems: repetition,self-correction and filler, and analyses the causes of redundancy from various perspectives, including information processing, proficiency in English and expression habits.By referring to existing research and experience from translation practice, the author also discusses the strategies to deal with the three problems, focusing on improving information analysis and integration, enhancing English input and strengthening self-monitoring.The analysis of this case study helps the author to improve fluency, conciseness and accuracy in Chinese-English consecutive interpreting, and at the same time to discover the causes of redundancy and give corresponding solutions, which will provide references for interpreters with similar problems and add some value to studies on redundancy in ChineseEnglish consecutive interpreting.
