Difficulties In English Translation Of Industrial Product Manuals And Some Strategies

As China has seen an impressive technology development,Chinese companies delivering high-quality industrial products started to enter foreign markets to increase their market share.In this process,these companies need professional language services to provide them with quality translations of their product manuals into English or other foreign languages.However,translating such manuals into another language usually involves greater challenges than many people may believe,especially for a translator not quite experienced in dealing with technical texts of this kind.In this thesis the author analyzes two types of challenges in the understanding of electrical terms technical jargons,and another two types of challenges in the improvement of the readability of translation—how to translate a paratactic Chinese sentence which always hides the logic relationship between sentences into a hypotactic English one which uses many conjunctions to express logic relationship.Then,several possible solutions are put forward in this thesis to solve these above-mentioned challenges,including using the context of the terms to help understand and translate them,learning about the definition of technical jargons to get quality translation,adopting English sentence structure and using more conjunctions to express logic relationship between sentences.I hope that these English translation strategies proposed in this thesis can help other translators who have little experience in improving the understanding of electrical terms and jargons,and the readability of translation to get quality English industrial instruction manual.
