On The Translation Effect And Reception Of Contemporary Chinese Science Fiction

Published in November 2016,Invisible Planets-An Anthology of Contemporary Chinese SF in Translation(abbreviated as Invisible Planets)is China’s first collection of science fiction presented to the West.This thesis is organized from the perspective of Medio-translatology under the framework of 5W communication model.Based on objective data,it tries to answer the questions of “who”“says what”“in which channel”“to whom”“with what effect”,and find out the reasons behind them.This thesis consists of four chapters.The first chapter is a literature review of the translation and reception of science fictions and studies on Invisible planets.Chapter two introduces Medio-translatology theory and 5W communication model in detail.Chapter three is a study on the translation and reception of the English version of Invisible Planets in English speaking countries,mainly from the subjective and objective aspects.The objective aspects include the library collections,awards received,media reports,and online ratings.The subjective aspects include reviews from professional figures and ordinary people overseas.The author strives to be objective through corpus analysis.Chapter four employs the "5W" communication model to explore the reasons for the effect attained.Translation plays an important role,and we should also pay more attention to the promotion.By analyzing the data and book reviews,Invisible Planets has achieved good translation effects in major English speaking countries.The reasons comprise: the flexible translation methods,the universal value of the novel’s theme,the diversified promotion means and the wide range of targeted audiences.In view of this,Chinese literature should also learn from such kind of methods to make Chinese culture exert greater influence.
