| Traditional studies of Chinese and Western translation compare the forms of two languages in order to achieve equivalence between languages, aiming to set up fixed skills and norms for translation activities and present the faithfulness of the translated text to the original one.In the context of globalization, cultural diversity gradually reflects its necessity and inevitability, while traditional translation strategies can not completely achieve equivalence between cultures.Andre Lefevere is regarded as one of the main representatives of the Cultural School of translation studies. His manipulation theory holds that,to some extent, translation is the manipulation and rewriting of the original text for a certain purpose.Translation activities are manipulated by totally three factors: ideology, poetics and patronage.Translators are bound to be influenced by some factors in the process of translation. Therefore,it is impossible for translators to achieve absolute faithfulness in a new language system, which means creative treason can’t be avoided.Invisible Planets is the first translated anthology of science fiction in China, presented to the West.It was translated and edited by Ken Liu,consisting of 13 works by seven Chinese science fiction writers. In addition to containing illusory color, science fiction always reflects the cultural background and social context. The thesis is carried on within the theoretical framework of manipulation theory, choosing the English version of Invisible Planets as the research object, making a comparative analysis of the original version and the translated one,and probing into the translator’s creative treason from the linguistic and cultural perspectives. Then, from the perspective of manipulation theory, this thesis analyzes the emergence of translator’s treason and the choice of translation strategies in the translated version, aiming to reveal how and why the three factors of manipulation theory affect Ken Liu’s variation and rewriting of the origin in the process of translation. This study finds that the translator’s treason at the linguistic level is mainly reflected in the translation of unique words and phrases with fictitious elements, translation of rhetorical devices and rearrangement of discourse;at the cultural level, the treason is mainly reflected in the translation of scientific culture, linguistic culture, historical culture, regional culture, social culture and material culture. At the same time, the generation of these treason is mainly affected by three elements of manipulation theory:Firstly, ideological manipulates Ken Liu’s conscious rewriting of the Chinese social culture, historical culture and regional culture in the original.Adopting transliteration, interpretative translation and other translation strategies can make the translation retain certain heterogeneity,at the same time, make the West understand China better,so as to make up for the differences between Chinese and Western concepts.Secondly, poetic manipulation is mainly reflected in Ken Liu’s rewriting of the poems, rhetorical expression and fictitious element, which conforms to the mainstream poetics of Western countries.Simplifying the expression in translation can also reduce the reading obstacles of Western readers.Thirdly, the manipulation of patronage is mainly related with the patron’s purposeful selection of the desired translator and translation, which makes Ken Liu intentionally rewrite the language culture and discourse arrangement, give more consideration to the popularity and acceptance of the translated version in western society and meet the requirements of the publishing house. This thesis makes an inductive study of the Invisible Planets and its English version, trying to summarize the translator’s creative treason, and then analyzes how the three elements of manipulation affect the translator’s translation process,so as to make more sci-fi works go to the world. |
