Hou Tongzeng was a famous martyr against the Qing Dynasty in the late Ming Dynasty in Jiading, and is a major figure in the study of local history and humanities in Jiading. The Hou family,as a prestigious clan in the late Ming Dynasty in the village of Zidi village, had many famous literati and politicians at that time.As the family leader after Hou Kongzhao and Hou Zhenyang,Hou Tongzeng had a high influence in the late Ming society and Jiading literary circles. The first chapter of this paper gives a general overview of the development lineage of the Hou family in Zidi village, and shows the general outlook and formation process of the Hou family style through the examination and analysis of several important figures in the development process of the Hou family.Hou Tongzeng was influenced by the family style of the Hou family and the general environment of the late Ming Dynasty, and faced with the indecisive choice between service and seclusion, life and death, but finally chose "loyalty" and fought hard to defend the city.In the analysis of Hou Tongzeng and the Hou family,it is obvious that this "loyalty" is not "foolish loyalty",but rather Hou Tongzeng’s protection of national dignity in the face of many trade-offs.The second chapter, based on the first chapter, develops on the basis of the inheritance of family ethics within the Hou family, focusing on the choice of in-laws of the Hou family and Hou Tongzeng’s main friendships. The careful selection of in-laws was an effort made by the Hou family to secure its own stability, which ensured the transmission of the family style while bringing new literary blood and a network of friendships to the Hou family. After he became a government official,Hou Tongzeng rewarded his successors and guided many of them, especially those from humble backgrounds, but it is difficult to further analyze these young friends because they only have their names recorded in the book. The third chapter is the focus of this paper, which differs from previous studies of Hou Tongzeng from a historical perspective and focuses on his literary aspects, analyzing and interpreting Hou Tongzeng’s view of literature, essay writing, poetics and poetry composition in relation to specific works.Hou Tongzeng’s literary outlook was deeply influenced by the Jiading school of literature, and his literary concepts and activities also fed the development of the Jiading school based on his influence at the time.As a Jiading literati who was aware of the existence of the Jiading School earlier,Hou Tongzeng adhered to the ancient school characteristics of the Jiading School and actively expanded the radiation of the Jiading School in his capacity as a country squire and school official, making a significant contribution to the development of late Ming literature and the inheritance of the Jiading School.Based on the relevant classical literature and the contents of the Complete Works of Hou Zhongjie Gong, the appendix lists three articles by Hou Tongzeng that are not included in the Complete Works of Hou Zhongjie Gong for additional reference.
