Lack Of Explicitation In Chinese-english Consecutive Interpreting And Solutions

When interpreting,interpreters need to deal with linguistic and cultural differences between the target language and the source language.The differences require interpreters to adopt explicitation methods to reveal concepts and their meaning,logic,and mood hidden in the source language,especially in Chinese to English consecutive interpretation.Explicitation helps listeners to understand the content clearly and easily.The thesis is a case study on the mock consecutive interpreting of the speech Heading to Stagflation: The World Economy and Finance After 2022.The thesis discusses the lack of explicitation in the translation and solutions.It starts with definitions,types,and the necessity of explicitation.Then,it describes how the mock interpreting took place and what were the challenges in interpretation.The thesis categorizes explicitation problems in the interpretation into three types,namely fuzzy concepts,fuzzy logic,and mood distortion.It digs into the symptoms,causes,and improvement measures.At last,the thesis proposes possible solutions to the lack of explicitation.It suggests that to avoid implicit concepts,names should be indicated clearly by adding personal pronouns,and replacing personal pronouns with nouns;and concepts should be explained by using expressions with clear meaning instead of fuzzy expressions,describing the degree of concepts,revealing the importance and the features of numbers,and explaining culture-loaded terms by providing cultural information.To avoid implicit logic,interpreters should highlight the logic and key information through reformulation such as arranging sentences in order,removing redundancy,filling in logical gaps,and adding logical connectives and relative pronouns.To avoid mood distortion,interpreters should be careful in choosing words to reflect mood correctly by adding modal verbs and avoiding word-to-word interpretation.
